District Profile
The Southeast Local School District is located in the southeastern portion of Portage County and has a strong reputation in academics, athletics, and extracurricular programs.  The district was formed in 1950 with the consolidation of five townships (Charlestown, Deerfield, Edinburg, Palmyra, and Paris), and it encompasses 125 square miles.  This makes our district one of the largest geographically in the state.  This makes us unique but it also makes the school the hub of the area where people can gather to enjoy many of the great events at the school.  Outdoor enthusiasts will love this area as people come from many miles to enjoy camping, fishing, swimming, hunting, hiking and boating available at West Branch State Park and Berlin Reservoir which are both located within the boundaries of our district.  We are also fortunate to have several institutions of higher learning nearby, including the University of Akron, Kent State University, Youngstown State University, and the Northeast Ohio Medical University.  Our district is a great place to raise a family with small town values and high standards in education. Nickname:  Pirates      School Colors: Maroon and Gold
Student enrollment 1525
The district has a Primary, Intermediate, Middle and High School.  We also have a county managed preschool program on our campus.
High School Highlights
The high school consists of grades 9-12. Southeast High School has a long standing tradition of academic excellence. In addition to having outstanding college preparatory and
general courses of study, SHS is affiliated with the Maplewood Career Center which offers vocational and tech prep courses of study. Southeast students can take advantage of receiving over 25 hours of college credit without ever leaving our campus. These courses offered are: Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, Advanced Placement World History, College Credit Plus (CCP) American Literature and Diversity, CCP Trigonometry, CCP Algebra, CCP Calculus, and CCP Statistics. We are proud to have one of the largest Future Farmers of America (FFA) programs in Northeast Ohio and our students have earned over 10 prestigious state degrees in the last decade and 2 national degrees last year. We also have one of the largest bands in the area with over 120 members strong. Our bands and choirs are both award-winning and annually qualify for the state contest. Southeast students take great
pride in academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Our 2017 graduates earned over $750,000 in scholarships and awards to public and private colleges and universities in Ohio and across the nation.  The strong Pirate athletic tradition continued in 2016-17 with league championships in volleyball, girls’ basketball, girls’ track, and baseball. Our volleyball and girls basketball teams finished district runner-up or top 32 in the state. Our volleyball coach is in the Hall of Fame and has the most wins in state history.
We are proud to honor our local veterans every year with a breakfast and ceremony on Veterans Day.  This event gives us an opportunity to thank over 50 service men and women who have served our country.
Finally, Southeast believes in students helping students with our successful Link Crew program which pairs selected leaders from the junior and senior class with incoming freshmen to make their transition to high school more enjoyable and successful.
Middle School Highlights
Our Middle School consists of grades 6-8 and the students enjoy a beautiful new building with a unique set up of individual areas (pods) for each grade level. Students have several accelerated placement classes available to them. Algebra is one of those classes where they can also earn a high school credit. The students’ academic progress is monitored by an assessment tool called Performance Matters.  We believe in ensuring a diversified student experience so every student takes music, art, and physical education.  We have also recently added a gifted class and a modern language class. The students who demonstrate strong academics, character, and community service can be selected to the middle school National Honor Society. There are varied opportunities for our students to get involved after school and we are proud that over 60% of our students stay after school for a club or
activity.  Programs available are Power of the Pen, student government, Math 24, fitness club, science club, and art club. Last year we had the Power of the Pen District champion who was recognized for her writing skills.  We have a long tradition of success in middle school athletics as well with league
champions in volleyball, football, girls basketball, and cross country just last year. The eighth graders culminate their time in the middle school experience with a spring trip to Washington D.C..
Intermediate School Highlights
Our Intermediate School consists of grades 3-5. The Intermediate has started the process to prepare for extending the OSU Literacy Collaborative to grades 3-5. The school provides gifted services daily and has over 200 computers available for regular student use. The school is using a
STAR assessment tool to monitor student progress to make sure our students are growing academically above the expected rate.  We are also proud to offer extracurricular opportunities for our students such as band, choir, dynamic dribblers, golf club, talent show, Math 24 club, and student council.  We also have grade level counseling available and daily lunch bunch groups offered to enhance social/emotional
development.
Primary School Highlights
Our Primary School consists of grades K-2. The Ohio State Literacy Collaborative was implemented in 2015 and has produced amazing results by helping to build a strong literacy foundation for our kids.  We have added a book room with hundreds of leveled books to meet the students at their
reading level. This program has been so successful that our principal and teachers have presented at the National Literacy Conference and the State Capital Conference. The building has built strong family connections with family literacy nights, fine arts night, family picnics, and many other opportunities for
parent involvement. We also have a strong PTO which has donated over $25,000 to our school district in the last few years.
